Developing a Christian Framework for Working Alongside “At Risk” Young People
(Wednesday 2:00pm)

What does it mean to be “at risk”? Why should Christian people work alongside “at risk” young people? What is the relationship between social action and evangelism? How do we understand the mission of Jesus and how it fits with work alongside “at risk” young people? This session takes a look at these questions and more, building a firm Biblical foundation on what it means to be a Christian seeking to make a commitment to working with young people who are “at risk” of a range of dangers in our communities. The session will examine the relationship between the Biblical concept of “shalom” and current psycho-social theory on resilience, risk factors and protective factors; and help us to answer the question of ”what can I do?” if I want to work alongside “at risk” young people as a Christian.

Setting Up and Running a Group for “At Risk” Young People in Schools
(Wednesday 4:00pm

This is a very practical session that will look at the important steps that need to be taken to set up and run a successful group for “at risk” young people in a state school setting. We will look at some of the theory that underpins group work with “at risk” young people, but will move on to the more specific, organisational things that need to be considered when working with state schools on such programs. We will also be talking about experiential learning and adventure-based learning programs and activities for both school-based and wilderness contexts.
